Medicine Buddha Mantra

The Healing Master of Lapis Lazuli Radiance, who is known as Medicine Buddha, brings about the healing of body, mind and spirit for all sentient beings. It is said that just to see an image of him or to hear his name can bring about unimaginable benefits. Viewing illness as a result of the three poisons – ignorance, desire and anger – Medicine Buddha has the power to see the root cause of disease and then, with compassion and wisdom, to treat the underlying condition.

As he emanates rays of healing energy, Medicine Buddhas’ most striking feature is his inviting blue radiance. He wears monks’ robes and is seated in the full lotus position. His upturned open left hand, symbolizing wisdom and stability, holds a begging bowl containing healing nectar and medicinal fruit. His right hand, facing outward, symbolizes the granting of blessings to those who seek his help.

There are many Medicine Buddha practises that do not require empowerment, and it is believed that by doing the practice of Medicine Buddha, we will benefit ourselves and all sentient beings through an awakening of healing energy.

The common mantra for Medicine Buddha is:

भैषज्यगुरुवैडूर्यप्रभाराज सूत्र
Tayata Om Bhekandze Bekhandze Maha Bhekandze Bhekandze Randza Sumungate Soha

Tayata = Gone beyond (beyond Samsara and Nirvana)
Om = Om: jewel holder, wish fulfilling one, auspicious one
Bhekandze Bhekandze = calling Medicine Buddha twice
Maha Bhekandze Bhekandze = Greatness of Medicine Buddha
Randza Samungate =Perfectly liberated or awakened
Soha = Dissolve in me

(Tibetan Version)
